Update: Apparently the Ginger Bread Dog House was too popular. The manufacturer won’t be able to make enough this season, so they will not be available. I personally wanted one too.

So What’s Your Dog?

October 6th, 2007 · No Comments

zoiehallowenn  Ever been confused about your dog’s ancestry? We are. The Humane Society called Zoie a Border Collie and Rottweiler mix, but I’m still not convinced. Now cheaper DNA tests may be the answer for thousands of dog owners confused about their beloved mutt.

The tests, which cost as little as $65, are the result of several years of work by scientists who gathered a large pool of DNA samples from thousands of dogs to create a sort of genetic roadmap of breeds.

For years, owners have been able to get dogs tested to prove they are the offspring of parents that breeders said they were. In the new testing, DNA markers that help tell breeds apart are checked against the thousands of DNA samples to find out Fido’s ancestry.

The cost of a cheek-swab test is $65; the cost of the blood test is up to vets but could range between $100 and $200.

Ask your veterinarian for more information.

Halloween - Black Cats Beware

October 4th, 2007 · No Comments

blackcat-734018 The risk may be remote, but many shelters and rescue groups halt the adoptions of black cats around Halloween, and increase their screening process. Because of the historical connections of black cats to bad luck, “witches” and rituals, black cats are at risk of being picked up for simple party props or even ritual sacrifice and torture.

Black cat owners should keep their pets inside during the holiday. The increase in seasonal adoption bans have increased at many shelters, because of irresponsible pet owners. Along with black cat bans, there’s the once-common bans on bunny adoptions around Easter and puppy adoptions as Christmas gifts.

Adopt Responsibly.

Chinese-Made Jerky for Dogs Could Be Tainted

September 18th, 2007 · No Comments

No recall has been issued, but a coalition of veterinarians are sending out some red flags. They noted they’ve been seeing an increase in pet illnesses recently, that some say is linked to some Chinese-made jerky treats.

Here?s the text of the statement the vets released to the press:

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has recently been made aware of several complaints from pet owners and veterinarians that multiple brands of jerky treats manufactured in China have been making pets sick. Symptoms of illness have included vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. To our knowledge, no deaths have been reported.

The AVMA posted an alert on its Web site on September 13 to inform its members and the public about what was known. Today, the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) issued a statement saying it also has become aware of an unusual number of dogs presenting similar symptoms and abnormal test results associated with consumption of some jerky treats.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently testing several products to see if a contaminant can be found. So far, they have ruled out melamine, one of the chemicals that led to the massive pet food recall this spring, but have yet to identify anything that might be making pets sick.

While a list of brand/product names of affected treats is not yet available, the AVMA has learned that all complaints have involved jerky treats from China. We recommend that pet owners use their best judgment in this matter.

Suspected cases should be reported to the FDA. To find the number for the FDA district office consumer complaint coordinator in your region, click here.

The AVMA is monitoring the situation and will provide updated information on our Web site as soon as it becomes available. Like all information on our Web site, we will only post information that is credible and has been confirmed.
